The right sheet size keeps a plan set readable, portable, and true to scale. When the size fits the job, field crews can read every dimension and project teams can carry the set where it’s needed.
At The Wassi Group’s print shop in Morton, IL, we print construction documents on ARCH sheet sizes. Here’s how those sizes break down, and how full-size and half-size sets each serve a project.

ARCH D is the size most project teams picture when they think of a full plan set. It’s large enough to show floor plans at readable scales. At the same time, it still fits on a plan table or in a flat file.
How Full-Size Sets Are Used
A full-size set prints at 100%. In other words, the scale on the sheet matches the scale in the title block. That makes a full-size set the working reference whenever someone needs to measure from the page.
- Permit submissions: Many building departments ask for full-size sets. Check with your local jurisdiction before printing.
- Field sets: Crews read dimensions and notes directly from the sheet.
- Trade coordination: Reviewing plans at true scale helps trades spot conflicts before work begins.
- Record sets: Owners and facility managers keep full-size sets on file for future reference.
How Half-Size Sets Are Used
A half-size set cuts each sheet dimension in half. For example, a 24″ × 36″ ARCH D sheet becomes a 12″ × 18″ ARCH B sheet. ARCH sizes share the same proportions, so the full drawing fits without cropping or distortion.
Half-size sets work well wherever portability matters more than measuring:
- Meetings and design reviews: Easy to spread across a conference table.
- Bid packages: Simpler to hand out to multiple subcontractors.
- Truck and office copies: Handy for quick reference on the go.
- Owner presentations: Clear enough to walk through the design without a plan table.
What Happens to Scale on a Half-Size Set
Shrinking a sheet to 50% also cuts the drawing scale in half. A floor plan drawn at 1/4″ = 1′-0″ reads at 1/8″ = 1′-0″ on a half-size sheet. However, the title block still lists the original scale. Anyone measuring from a half-size set needs to account for that change.
Graphic scale bars shrink along with the drawing, so they stay accurate at any print size. A simple note on the cover sheet also helps. For instance, “Half-size set — drawings at 50% of noted scale” keeps everyone reading the set correctly.
Full-Size, Half-Size, or Both?
Many projects use both. Full-size sets go to the building department and the field, where true scale matters. Half-size sets travel to meetings, bid walks, and job trailers, where a smaller set is easier to handle.
Planning for both at the start saves a second trip to the print shop. It also keeps every set on the same revision.
Tips for Sending Plans to Print
- Match the PDF page size to the sheet size. A 24″ × 36″ drawing should export as a 24″ × 36″ PDF.
